A sandbox on the lab bench. Drag genome and coat parts onto the core to assemble an entirely fictional virus, then drag a containment vessel into the slot underneath and make sure it is actually strong enough to hold what you built. Four read-outs tell you how it is turning out. When it holds together, give it a name and file it in your specimen log.

1. Build the core

Drag a genome part (RNA, DNA or a plasmid) from the bin onto the dashed ring around the core. Then add coat parts: spikes, a capsid shell, a lipid envelope, a tail fibre. Without a genome the specimen is inert, and without a coat it falls apart.

2. Contain it

Drag a vessel into the dashed slot at the bottom. A glass vial holds four parts, a sealed flask seven, a cryo canister eleven. Exceed the capacity and the read-out flips to breach risk until you size up or take parts off.

3. Read the bars

Virulence, spread, stability and containment all move as you build. Mixing four or more different part types earns a variety bonus. Stacking the same part over and over does much less than you would expect.

4. Name and file

Once the grade reads viable or weak, type a name and press File Specimen or hit Enter. Drag any attached part off the core to remove it, or use Clear Bench to start over. Randomise builds a valid specimen for you.
