Why app stores are different in every country

Apple's App Store and Google Play are really collections of national storefronts. Top charts, search results, featured apps, prices, in-app purchase prices, ratings, reviews and even which apps are available differ by country. App store optimisation (ASO) is therefore a per-market job: an app can rank in the top ten for a keyword in one country and not at all in the next.

App marketers, developers and analysts need to see each storefront as local users do. Many store pages are available on the web, and their content depends on the country selected and, for some views, the visitor's location. Geonode residential proxies targeted by country let you check web storefronts and search from each market, alongside the official tools stores provide.

Official sources first

For your own apps, developer consoles provide downloads, rankings, conversion data and reviews by country. Many commercial ASO tools provide rankings and keyword data at scale. Use proxies to verify what real users see, to look at competitors' listings and charts, and for markets or details the tools don't cover.

Checking listings by country

  1. Use a residential exit in the target country with a fresh browser profile.
  2. Open the app's web listing for that country's storefront.
  3. Record title, subtitle, description, screenshots, price, rating and review count.
  4. Take a screenshot for comparison.
  5. Repeat for competitors.

Listing localisation mistakes (untranslated screenshots, wrong currency, outdated descriptions) are common and easy to fix once you see them.

Search and rankings

Store search results depend on the storefront, the device and sometimes the user's history. Web-based checks through a residential exit give a reasonable approximation for each storefront; for precise device-based rankings, use test devices or ASO tools. Track a small set of priority keywords per market weekly.

Proxy tip: Before scaling, run a short pilot on your real targets with Geonode and record success rate, latency and GB per result. Our our complete Geonode guide explains which Geonode product to start with.

Prices and availability

App and in-app purchase prices are set per storefront, often with local price tiers. Competitive research means checking these market by market. Availability checks catch apps that are missing in a market because of a configuration mistake or a regulatory restriction.

Reviews by market

Reviews are written per storefront and often in the local language. Reading them market by market reveals localisation problems, regional bugs and feature requests. For your own app, use the developer console; for competitors, read their listings from each market. See Geonode for review monitoring.

Costs

Store pages are moderate in size, and research is periodic. A weekly check of a few apps and keywords across a handful of markets uses little residential traffic, and Geonode's bandwidth doesn't expire between checks.

A sample ASO research cycle

  1. Keyword list per market: 20 to 50 keywords in the local language, chosen from search suggestions and competitor listings.
  2. Weekly ranking check: from a residential exit in each market, record your app's position for each keyword and the top five competitors.
  3. Monthly listing review: screenshots of your listing and three competitors' listings per market, compared side by side.
  4. Monthly review read: the latest reviews for your app and competitors in each market, summarised into themes.
  5. Quarterly experiments: change a title, subtitle or screenshot set in one market and watch rankings and conversion.

Developer console data tells you what happened to downloads; regional checks through Geonode tell you what users saw. Combining both explains changes far better than either alone.

Common localisation mistakes to look for

  • Screenshots with English text in non-English storefronts.
  • Descriptions translated literally without local keywords.
  • Prices left at an automatic conversion that doesn't fit local price points.
  • Feature claims that don't apply in that market.
  • Missing or outdated "what's new" notes in some languages.

Each is easy to spot from a local view and easy to fix. See Geonode for localization testing for the same discipline applied to websites.

FAQ

Do app store rankings really differ by country?

Yes, often dramatically. Each storefront has its own charts and search results.

Can I check another country's store without changing my account region?

Web storefront pages for each country are publicly viewable, and a residential exit in that country shows them as a local visitor would.

Should I use ASO tools or proxies?

ASO tools for scale and history; proxies for verification, screenshots and details tools don't cover.

How often should I check?

Weekly for most keywords and markets; daily around launches and updates.
