Quick Answers

Is Tor a Proxy?

Sort of. Tor routes your traffic through three volunteer relays, each a kind of proxy, and your apps connect to it as a local SOCKS5 proxy. It is built for anonymity, not speed.

The short answer

Tor sends your traffic through three relays run by volunteers, wrapping it in layers of encryption (onion routing) so no single relay knows both who you are and where you are going. On your computer, Tor runs as a local SOCKS5 proxy that apps can use.

Tor vs commercial proxies

Tor is free and strongly anonymous but slow, and its exit IPs are public, so many sites block or challenge them. Commercial proxies are fast, choose their country on demand, and look like normal users, but your provider knows who you are.
