The short answer
Port 1080 is registered with IANA for the SOCKS protocol. A proxy on host:1080 is very likely a SOCKS4 or SOCKS5 server, which can carry any TCP traffic (and UDP with SOCKS5), not just web pages.
What it means for you
Configure it as SOCKS, not HTTP: use socks5://host:1080 in code, or pick "SOCKS v5" in your browser or app. Choose socks5h:// in tools like curl if you want DNS lookups to happen at the proxy, which avoids DNS leaks.

Also known as
SOCKS port, default SOCKS5 port.
