When datacenter proxies are the best proxies
It's fashionable to dismiss datacenter proxies as "easily detected", but for a huge share of real-world jobs they're the best value proxies you can buy. Most websites don't run aggressive bot protection. On those sites, datacenter proxies deliver near-perfect success rates at a fraction of the cost of residential bandwidth, with better speed and stability.
The trick is buying good ones. Datacenter proxies vary enormously in subnet quality, IP history, location and network performance. This guide explains what to look for and which providers to test. If you're still deciding between proxy types, start with the main best proxies guide.
What makes datacenter proxies good or bad
Subnet diversity
Datacenter IPs are allocated in blocks. If all 100 of your proxies sit in one /24 subnet, a website that bans that subnet bans all of them at once. Good providers spread your IPs across many subnets and, ideally, several different hosting ASNs.
IP history
Some IP ranges have been used for spam or abuse and sit on blocklists. Fresh, clean ranges perform much better. Ask providers whether they rotate out flagged ranges, and test reputation yourself. See IP reputation and proxies.
Dedicated vs shared
Dedicated proxies are yours alone. Shared proxies are cheaper but carry neighbour risk. For anything important, dedicated is worth the small premium.
Location
Pick locations close to your target's servers for speed, or in the countries whose content you need.
Network performance
Datacenter proxies should be fast. Check median latency, throughput, and connection failure rates at load.
Bandwidth and thread limits
Many plans include unlimited bandwidth; some cap threads or speed. Make sure the caps fit your concurrency.
Replacement policy
If an IP gets banned on your target, can you swap it? How often? How quickly?
Datacenter proxy providers worth shortlisting
| Provider | Typically suits | Notable strengths | Things to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Webshare | Budget buyers, developers | Low prices, self-serve configuration, small free plan | Shared vs dedicated options, subnet spread |
| Rayobyte | US-focused scraping teams | Long datacenter track record, large IP inventory | Plan terms and replacement policy |
| Oxylabs | Enterprises | Dedicated and shared DC pools, strong support | Pricing at your volume |
| Bright Data | Enterprises | Large DC network with flexible pricing models | Product complexity, price |
| Decodo (formerly Smartproxy) | Mid-market | Easy setup, rotating and dedicated DC options | Thread caps |
| IPRoyal | Small buyers | Affordable dedicated DC proxies | Location coverage |
| Proxy-Seller, Proxy-Cheap and similar | Budget static IPs | Low per-IP prices, many locations | Subnet quality, support |
See datacenter proxy providers compared for more detail, and cheap datacenter proxies if budget is the priority.
Best datacenter proxies by use case
| Use case | Best option | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scraping lenient sites at scale | Rotating DC or many dedicated IPs | Spread across subnets |
| Sneaker monitors | Dedicated DC near retailer | Speed matters most. See sneaker monitor proxies |
| SEO tools on tolerant engines | Dedicated DC | Not reliable for Google at scale |
| General automation and testing | Shared or dedicated DC | Shared is fine for low risk |
| Bandwidth-heavy downloads | Unlimited dedicated DC | Check speed caps |
| Account work on lenient platforms | Dedicated DC, one per account | Use ISP for strict platforms |
How to test datacenter proxies
- Buy the smallest package or use a trial.
- Check how many distinct /24 subnets and ASNs your IPs cover.
- Check each IP against a few reputation and blocklist services.
- Run a few hundred requests per IP against your actual target, at the rate you plan to use.
- Measure success rate and latency per subnet; if one subnet fails badly, ask for replacements.
See how to test proxies before buying.
Proxy tip: When you shortlist providers, include at least one with flexible pay-as-you-go pricing. Geonode fits that role: per-GB residential traffic, static ISP and datacenter options, and scraping APIs if you'd rather pay per request. Read Geonode datacenter proxies for details.
Getting more out of datacenter proxies
- Use realistic headers and browser-like TLS fingerprints. Many blocks attributed to "datacenter IPs" are really caused by obviously scripted clients.
- Throttle per IP and per target domain. See rate limiting and proxies.
- Rotate across subnets, not just IPs. See proxy rotation strategies.
- Fall back to residential proxies only for the requests that fail.
Datacenter proxy locations: what to choose
- Near the target's servers for speed (many large sites are served from major US and EU hubs or CDNs).
- In the target's market if content varies by country.
- Spread across regions if you scrape globally.
A quick latency test from your server to a few candidate locations shows which works best. See proxy speed test.
Datacenter proxies for Puppeteer and Playwright
Datacenter proxies pair well with headless browsers on lenient sites because bandwidth is usually unlimited. Use one browser context per proxy and rotate through your list. See Puppeteer proxies and Playwright proxies.
Maintaining a datacenter proxy list
- Track success per IP and per subnet.
- Replace the worst 5 to 10% monthly.
- Add new subnets rather than more IPs from existing ones.
- Retest after major target site changes.
Datacenter proxies for watching your own sites
Some of the most useful datacenter proxy work has nothing to do with other people's websites. Teams use them to check their own:
- Geo-routing and CDN behaviour. Confirm that visitors in each country reach the right edge, language and currency.
- Geo-blocking and compliance. Check that content restricted in certain countries really is blocked there, and only there.
- Uptime from outside your cloud. A health check that runs from your own cloud region can miss problems your customers see. Proxies in several countries give you a cheap outside view.
- Your own rate limits and bot rules. Verify that protections trigger where you expect, and don't block legitimate users in particular regions. See rate limiting and proxies.
- Third-party scripts. Make sure consent banners, analytics and ads load correctly from different locations.
Datacenter IPs are ideal for this: cheap, fast and stable, and you aren't trying to look like a consumer. Pick a handful of locations that match your main markets; see US proxies and UK proxies.
If your site sits behind a CDN, remember that you're testing the CDN's behaviour as much as your own servers. Forward vs reverse proxy explains which layer answers which request.
FAQ
What are the best datacenter proxies for web scraping?
Dedicated datacenter proxies spread across many subnets from a provider with a good replacement policy. For large crawls, rotating datacenter pools are convenient. See best proxies for web scraping.
Are datacenter proxies good for sneakers?
Only for monitors and some lenient stores. See datacenter proxies for sneakers.
How many datacenter proxies do I need?
Divide the requests per hour you need by the requests per hour each IP can safely make on your target. Add a buffer of 20 to 30%.
Are datacenter proxies cheaper than residential?
Almost always per unit, and often per successful request on lenient sites. On protected sites, residential can work out cheaper. See residential vs datacenter proxies.
Editorial note: Proxy providers change their pools, features and prices often, so treat any figures here as typical ranges at the time of writing and confirm current terms with the provider before you buy.
