Proxies for Scraping Google Search Results

How to collect Google search results with proxies: why Google blocks scrapers, residential vs datacenter, location parameters, avoiding "unusual traffic" pages, and when to use a SERP API.

Why Google is hard to scrape

Google is one of the most heavily defended websites on the internet. It detects automated queries using IP reputation, request patterns, browser signals and JavaScript checks, and it responds with "unusual traffic" pages and CAPTCHAs. Over time, Google has also increased its reliance on JavaScript to render results, which makes simple HTTP-based scraping less reliable than it once was.

Google's terms of service restrict automated querying. Many organisations that need search data use commercial SERP APIs, which handle collection and provide structured data. If you build your own collector, understand the terms and legal context first. See are proxies legal?.

Rotating residential proxies with per-request rotation are the baseline for DIY SERP collection.

Getting the right location

Search results vary by country, city and language. To get accurate local results:

  • Use a proxy in the target country (and city if available). See geo-targeted proxies.
  • Set Google's language and country parameters (such as hl and gl).
  • For precise local results, Google supports location-encoding parameters used by many rank trackers; combined with a same-country proxy, they give city-level results without needing a proxy in every city.
  • Use clean sessions without personalisation cookies.

Avoiding "unusual traffic"

  • Rotate the IP for every query.
  • Keep overall request rates moderate and add jitter.
  • Use realistic, consistent browser headers or a real browser.
  • Don't paginate deeply; request the number of results you need.
  • Detect challenge pages and back off.

Parsing changes constantly

Google's result layout changes frequently and varies by query type (local packs, shopping, videos, AI-generated summaries, "People also ask"). Any DIY parser needs ongoing maintenance. That's a big reason SERP APIs are popular.

Proxy tip: Want to skip proxy management on some targets? Geonode offers both raw proxies and a Scraper API that returns HTML or Markdown with optional JavaScript rendering. We compare the two approaches in Geonode for SEO rank tracking.

Other search engines

Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, Baidu and others each have their own defences, generally less aggressive than Google's at low volumes. The same principles apply.

SERP data points worth capturing

  • Organic positions, URLs and titles.
  • Featured snippets and their sources.
  • Local pack results.
  • People Also Ask questions.
  • Shopping, video, image and news modules.
  • AI-generated overviews and the sources they cite, where present.
  • Ads (top and bottom).

Store the raw HTML briefly so you can re-parse when layouts change.

Measuring SERP collection quality

CheckWhy
Expected number of organic resultsDetects partial pages
Presence of known modulesDetects layout changes
Location markers in the pageConfirms the location was applied
Language of resultsConfirms language parameters
CAPTCHA detection rateTracks block levels
  • Use clean sessions; don't let cookies accumulate across queries.
  • Avoid sending many queries from one IP in quick succession.
  • Spread queries across the day.
  • Prefer HTTP fetching where it still returns usable results; use browsers only where necessary.

When to stop and buy

If your CAPTCHA rate stays high after tuning, or parser maintenance consumes significant time, a SERP API is likely cheaper overall. See best proxies for SEO rank tracking and SEO proxies.

Capturing AI Overviews and other new SERP features

Search results pages now carry much more than ten blue links. Google's AI Overviews, and AI-driven answer formats more generally, push organic results down the page and change which sources get attention. If you track rankings or visibility, capture them:

  • Whether an AI Overview appeared for each query, location and device.
  • Which sources it cited, and whether your site or a competitor's was among them.
  • Where the first organic result started, in pixels or by element order, not just its rank number.
  • Other features present: local packs, shopping units, video carousels, "People also ask" and so on.

Location matters even more for these features than for classic results. Availability differs by country and language, and it can vary with signed-in state, so keep each observation's country, city, language and device with the data, and use proxies that genuinely match the location you report on.

Expect the page structure to keep changing; parse defensively and alert when a feature you track disappears from every result, which usually means your parser broke rather than the feature vanished.

Key takeaways

  • Google is one of the hardest targets and restricts automated querying in its terms; many organisations use SERP APIs instead.
  • Rotating residential proxies with per-query rotation are the baseline for DIY collection; datacenter IPs are challenged quickly.
  • Combine a same-country proxy with Google's language, country and location parameters for accurate local results.
  • Keep request rates low, detect "unusual traffic" pages, and back off.
  • Layouts change constantly, so parsers need ongoing maintenance. See best proxies for seo rank tracking.

FAQ

Can I scrape Google with free proxies?

No. They're almost always blocked already.

How many queries per IP can I send to Google?

Very few before being challenged, which is why per-query rotation is standard.

Are IPv6 proxies good for Google?

Google supports IPv6, but it applies limits per subnet, and results can be inconsistent. See IPv6 proxies.
