Why use proxies in automation tools

Automation platforms make it easy to fetch web pages, call APIs and move data between apps. Proxies help when a workflow needs to:

  • Fetch pages from another country (prices, availability, local content).
  • Avoid rate limits when a workflow polls a site frequently.
  • Use a fixed IP that a partner has whitelisted.
  • Keep the platform's shared IPs out of it, since cloud automation platforms share outbound IPs among many users.

n8n

n8n's HTTP Request node has a proxy option in its settings. Enter a proxy URL such as:

text
http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@PROXY_IP:PORT

or the Webshare backbone with a rotate or session username. Self-hosted n8n can also use environment variables for a default proxy. For a Geonode version, see Geonode with n8n.

Make and Zapier

Proxy support in hosted automation platforms varies and changes over time. Common approaches:

  • Use an HTTP module that supports proxy settings, where available.
  • Call a small serverless function (or your own endpoint) that makes the proxied request and returns the result.
  • Use a scraping or fetch service that accepts a proxy parameter.

Check each platform's current documentation.

Managing proxies from workflows

Webshare's API lets workflows manage proxies too:

  • Fetch the current proxy list at the start of a run.
  • Authorize a new IP when a self-hosted automation server changes address. See Webshare IP authorization.
  • Request replacements for proxies that keep failing.
  • Check usage and alert when bandwidth runs low.

Workflow ideas

  • Price watch: daily fetch of competitor pages through country proxies, extract price, send changes to a spreadsheet or chat. See Webshare for price monitoring.
  • Uptime from abroad: check key pages through proxies in several regions and alert on failures. See Webshare for website monitoring.
  • Lead enrichment: fetch public company pages through rotating proxies to respect per-IP limits.
  • Content changes: detect changes on policy or pricing pages and notify the team.

Budget tip: Before scaling, run a short pilot with Webshare on your real targets and record success rate, latency and bandwidth per result. Our our complete Webshare guide explains which Webshare product fits which job.

Pitfalls

  • Credentials in plain text. Store proxy credentials in the platform's credentials manager, not in node parameters.
  • No timeouts. Set timeouts so a dead proxy doesn't stall the workflow.
  • No retries. Add retry logic with a new proxy or session.
  • Too many runs. Polling every minute adds up in bandwidth and platform costs.
  • Testing in the tool first. Test the proxy with cURL first so you know whether problems are the proxy or the workflow. See Webshare with cURL.

Comparing providers

Geonode also works in n8n and similar tools, and its Scraper API can return pages as Markdown for AI-powered workflows. See Webshare vs Geonode browser extensions and integrations.

n8n workflow example: daily price check

  1. Schedule trigger: every morning.
  2. HTTP Request node: fetch the competitor page with a Webshare proxy in the target country.
  3. HTML node: extract the price with a CSS selector.
  4. Compare node: check against yesterday's value stored in a sheet or database.
  5. Notify node: post to chat if the change exceeds a threshold.

Add an error branch that retries once with a different proxy, then alerts if it still fails.

Managing proxies in self-hosted automation

For self-hosted n8n or similar tools, store Webshare credentials as encrypted credentials, and if the server has a fixed IP, consider IP authorization so workflows don't need passwords at all.

Keeping automation costs down

PracticeEffect
Fetch only what you needLess bandwidth
Run less oftenFewer requests and executions
Cache resultsAvoids refetching unchanged pages
Use datacenter IPs where possibleCheaper than residential

Proxy tip: For a second opinion on hard targets, run the same test through Geonode residential proxies, which support sticky sessions up to 24 hours and ASN targeting. We compare the two in Webshare vs Geonode.

When to move to code

If a workflow grows into dozens of nodes with complex retry and parsing logic, a short script is often easier to maintain. Keep the automation platform for scheduling and notifications, and call the script from it.

A real-world example

A small e-commerce business uses n8n to check 30 competitor product pages every morning. The HTTP Request node uses a Webshare datacenter proxy in the business's own country, an HTML node extracts prices, and changes over 5% are posted to the team chat. When two competitors start blocking the requests, the workflow is updated to use the residential backbone for those two only. The whole setup took an afternoon and runs for a few dollars a month.

For the bigger picture beyond these two providers, read our best proxies buyer's guide, and see cheap proxies for ways to cut cost per successful request.

Key takeaways

  • n8n's HTTP Request node accepts a proxy URL; other platforms vary.
  • Store proxy credentials in the platform's credentials manager.
  • The Webshare API can fetch lists, authorize IPs and check usage from workflows.
  • Add timeouts, retries and error branches to proxied workflow steps.
  • Move complex logic to a script when workflows grow large.

FAQ

Does n8n support Webshare proxies?

Yes, through the HTTP Request node's proxy setting.

Can I rotate IPs in an automation workflow?

Yes. Use the backbone gateway with the rotate option, or pick a different proxy from the list each run.

Are free proxies enough for automation?

For light workflows, Webshare's free plan can be enough. Watch the 1 GB monthly limit.

Can Zapier use a proxy?

Proxy support depends on the step type; a common workaround is calling your own small function that makes the proxied request.

How do I store proxy credentials in n8n?

Use n8n's credentials feature or environment variables, not plain node parameters.

Do automation platforms share outbound IPs?

Hosted platforms often do, which is one reason to route sensitive or rate-limited requests through your own proxies.
